This October 29 th , field trip participants assemble at the Huntsville Depot and spend all day exploring the so-called “backbone” of the Confederacy, the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. Starting at 7 a.m., the first stop will be the depot itself, where the railroad link was first broken on April 12th , 1862. From there we’ll travel by bus and explore the locations all along the railroad, the sites of small battles, guerrilla attacks and reprisals, and repair efforts by both sides during the course of the war. Depending on the time we reach Bridgeport, we may continue to Battle Creek and Whitesides, or end at the bridges over the Tennessee and return to the depot. The trip will be led by John Scales. Estimated cost is $90 per person, plus plan to either bring a lunch or pay for your lunch. (Bus charter prices have gone up by 50%, so we couldn’t afford Vicksburg!)
